Haight Street Art Center presents The Silence of the Good

Opening October 10, 2020

The Haight Street Art Center will open an outdoor and on-line exhibition on October 10 to consider the history of voting in America and encourage voting in the 2020 election. The Silence of the Good is free of charge and will remain on exhibit through November 15. The exhibition is located in the Alchemy Community Garden at 155 Laguna Street in Hayes Valley, San Francisco, which is open daily during daylight hours. Visitors to the outdoor exhibition will be required to maintain social distancing and wear face coverings.

The Silence of the Good features the work of 10 artists including Micah Bazant, DOMO, Emulsify, Alexandra Fischer, Gary Houston, Hundred Storms, John Mavroudis, Julio Salgado, Chris Shaw and Mari Tepper. The exhibition is shown in conjunction with posters from the HSAC’s previous exhibition on voting, 19th Amendment: 2020 Vision.

The title to this exhibition is taken from the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail”:

We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the hateful words and actions of the bad people but for the appalling silence of the good people.

– Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The Haight Street Art Center promotes advancement of poster art and artists to enable poster/graphic art and artists to thrive and continue to enrich American popular culture. Drawing upon the influence of San Francisco’s counterculture history, the Art Center provides educational and engaging experiences through art, music, exhibitions and public programs to create community, encourage personal exploration and inspire action toward positive cultural change.

The galleries are free and open to the public on the following days:

Wednesday – Sunday, 12 Noon – 6PM

Printmaking with Gary Houston of Voodoo Catbox

Printmaking with Gary Houston of Voodoo Catbox

September 14, 2020 By Moonalice Posters Leave a Comment

Portland-based artist Gary Houston, currently with 30 posters in the Moonalice series, has created a wonderful video series on the printmaking process.

Some of Gary’s posters (pictured below) have been screenprinted by Gary, and this four part series covers the process that brings these beautiful posters to life, each one individually signed and numbered.

The series begins with the initial concept sketch and transforming that drawing into a scratchboard illustration. Part two digs into color separations, while the third segment teaches about preparing the screens, before the final part of printing.

Part 1 – Illustration

Part 2 – Color Separations

Part 3 – Preparing Screens

Part 4 – Printing

TIME Magazine Sept 2020 Cover Illustration by John Mavroudis

TIME Magazine Sept 2020 Cover Illustration by John Mavroudis

September 10, 2020 By Moonalice Posters Leave a Comment

Artist John Mavroudis continues to create striking art, relevant to the issues effecting humanity today. In his third illustration to grace the cover of TIME Magazine, John features the number 200,000 representing the Americans that have lost their lives to COVID-19 under failed leadership.

This is the first time since September 2001 that TIME Magazine has featured a black border. Read the full story at Time.com.

This is a slow, steady march of death… with little flash or pizazz to rivet the attention of the viewer, so we just keep trudging on, accepting this TRUE American carnage.

How many more before we finally wake up?

– John Mavroudis

Great Work John 🙏

John’s gorgeous art graces the Moonalice poster series 35 times and is included in the Roger McNamee (Doobie Decibel System) series a dozen times. See them all here.

“Live To Love” Words & Music Pete Sears

The Rhythm of our lives flow by as the sun sets in the western sky
It’s only up for us to say what’s right or wrong and when to stay
We ride headlong into the fray, and we live to love another way
Sometimes I wish the rain would stay, or come back on some other day

Sometimes we slip and fall alone, cross the raging river stone by stone
We usually reap what we have sown; by and by the white bird has flown
Through the darkest night new hope is born, with each new day by the light of dawn
Fight the raging current till, we find our way by our own free will

Chorus:
Try not to lose faith in your fellow man, but if he knocks you down, take a stand
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, let’s make the most of what’s given to us
Never met a newborn I didn’t like, and I hope they grow toward the light
But if they fall there’s only us to blame, the life they know is the life we gave to them

Take me to your place of rest; I’ll give to you my very best
When you’re feeling weary come to me, we’ll dance together by the sea
The sanctity of life is blessed, as your hair flows down across your breast
All we want is life to be, all creatures on this earth to be free

Try to keep an open mind, let no man of your will deprive
Let your conscience be your guide, try to hate no man alive
To forgive is to release, a healing power and inner peace
When we fall short, blame no one, one for all and all for one

To trim the lamps for those in need, takes courage, strength and harmony
Let’s build a nest lest they should fall, a little from each means a lot for all
Up in the sky fly’s the white-winged dove, stay kind and true to those you love
That poor old man in the gutter mud, could be an angel from above

Live in the moment come what may, let no man tell you what to say
Spread your light when skies are grey, and live to love another day
Respect all creatures great and small, there’s never enough, but there’s enough for all
When storm clouds gather, and you begin to fall, lean to the wind and stand up tall

Spread your light when skies are grey, and live to love another day
Spread your light when skies are grey, and live to love another day
Spread your light when skies are grey, and live to love another day
Spread your light when skies are grey, and live to love another day

Outdoor Art Exhibition Aug 26-Sep 30, 2020

Haight Street Art Center presents 19th Amendment: 2020 Vision featuring the poster art of 22 women and non-binary artists. This art exhibit celebrates the achievement of the suffragists, reflects on the complex and troubled history of the suffrage and voting rights movement in the United States, and points to a more hopeful future in which all people, especially those from marginalized communities, have full enfranchisement.
